Suppose you are wondering where to go this summer and looking for options for traveling in the US. In that case, I suggest making the California – Vegas combo your summer destination, especially if you live in Southern California!
One advantage of living in Southern California is its proximity to Las Vegas. And Vegas is full of options for you to enjoy. From the vibrant and festive Vegas Strip and Downtown to all the malls, casinos, and nightlife. There is so much to see in Vegas!
And the good part is that Vegas is a short drive from Southern California. So, after enjoying the beach in Cali this summer, you should consider heading to Las Vegas. Even if you don't live in Southern California, the combination of Southern California and Vegas is a savvy travel destination for the summer.
Here are some tips if you are traveling from California to Las Vegas:
Go By Car
Going from California to Las Vegas is a pleasant drive. It’s not the first time we have done it; we assure you, it’s a nice drive. Once you hit Corona, you take route 15, all the way to Vegas. There are good quality and well-kept rest areas for bathrooms and snacks.
The car air conditioning system is the most important thing to check before you hit the road.
Go Mid-Week
The last time we went to Vegas, we went during the week. Unfortunately, like many places, Vegas is extra busy during the weekend. The good news is that you don’t have to be there during the weekend to experience the best of Vegas. Las Vegas is a party no matter which day you prefer to go.
During the week, however, we found more hotel options and places to eat and enjoy without suffering the crowds. Also, keep in mind that shows take some weekdays off so they can work all weekend.
Stay In Hotels Further From Casinos
We prefer to stay in hotels further from the Casinos. They are usually less expensive, less crowded, and have less noise. For those traveling with kids, staying away from the casinos is a better option. Those under 21 are not allowed to linger in the casinos; they can walk through but must keep moving towards a destination.
The more kid-friendly hotels have rides (New York-New York and Stratosphere) or attractions (Circus-Circus has arcades and circus shows). Other attractions include the water show at Bellagio, the volcano eruption at Treasure Island, or even a gondola ride around the Venetian. Finally, don’t forget to bring the kids to see the Freemont Street Experience. Amazing light shows, zip-lines, and performances will keep the kids and adults impressed.
Another reason to stay in a hotel off the Strip is options for enjoying a swimming pool. Many Hotels/Casinos in Vegas have turned their swimming pools into paid attractions for adults with swim-up bars and twenty-something activities.
Take Uber/Lyft From Hotel To Strip
Since we stay in hotels away from the Vegas Strip, taking Uber/Lyft is our preferred choice. We have not had any bad experiences using Uber or Lyft in Vegas. They are very professional, vastly available, and trained to please tourists.
On our last trip, we just used Lyft. It was hard to pass on their introductory offer, and we linked their loyalty points to our hotel program so that we could get that free hotel stay sooner!
Taking a ride service also allows you to have a couple of drinks without worrying about getting a DUI. And it is much cheaper than paying for parking.
Find A Hotel With Free Parking at The Strip
If you aren’t in a hotel on the Vegas Strip, you will pay for parking, and even if you are staying there, they may charge you to park. So, if you bring your car to the Strip, you might need to spend extra money to pay for parking. And it can be steep!
We used to find hotels with free parking; however, on this last trip, we had some difficulty. So then, after going in and out of hotels to check their prices, we found that the few free parking areas tend to be at either end of the Strip. So we parked at the Tropicana for free and walked.
Enjoy the Less Crowded Hours of Morning and Early Evening
Vegas is extremely hot during the summer, with an average temperature of over 100F and not much cooler the rest of the year. If you can’t tolerate the temperature, avoid the hottest hours by walking on the Strip early in the morning or later in the evening.
One thing not to forget to bring is a hat. And, of course, sunscreen!
Go For A Walk And Adventure In The Optional Entrances
The Las Vegas Strip is an adventure in itself. It’s fun, crowded, and lively. The Malls are beautiful with many restaurants and great air conditioners!
Walking on the Strip is exciting. But, don’t limit yourself to the main street. Instead, look around for areas away from the hotels’ main entrances. For example, we found lush gardens around Mandalay Bay Statuaries around Luxor and Fantastic gelato in a food court near the Venetian. There are lots of spots with something different to see or experience. You’ll also find several sites for great photos and videos.
Get your show tickets before you go
Vegas is a hub for shared arts, culture, live music, and comedic performances. From regular shows to various famous attractions on the Strip. There is no shortage of entertainment in Las Vegas!
There are hundreds of shows to choose from in Vegas. But before you go, you should buy tickets. Don’t delay purchasing because many shows sell out quickly or only have limited options.
There are also kiosks scattered around the Strip selling discounted tickets. They will have many tickets for the less popular shows and only a few (if any) top dollar tickets for the top stars.
Conclusion
The itinerary Las Vegas – Southern California is a savvy summer destination. One can enjoy the southern California beaches of Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego and then go to Las Vegas for a different experience. Southern California has a vast selection of things to do and enjoy during the summer. The weather is perfect for the beach, summer picnics, and outdoor festivals.
