The Northeast of Brazil is a stunning region. Rich in natural beauty, fantastic coastline, and unique places. Its long coastline is considered one of the most amazing in Brazil. Swimming, fishing, and fresh seafood cuisine will delight you. Planning a getaway to this region during the long winter in the northern hemisphere should be on your bucket list!
But before you embark on this trip, make sure you select the best time of the year to travel there and follow some of the tips I created in this post so that you can take advantage of all that the area offers. I will not talk about specific places you should visit, hotels/accommodations, etc. Instead, this post is about what you should bring with you, the best time to travel, and other essential information to go on this trip.
Here are a few things you want to take into consideration when going to the Northeast of Brazil:
The Best Time to Travel to This Region:
It depends on your tolerance level for heat, interests, and expectations. But if you are going to the Northeast of Brazil, it is best to go during the Brazilian summer (December -March), winter season in the US. Simply because the summer months are the best period to enjoy everything this beautiful region offers, and many places will have parties, events, and tours just dedicated to the summer months.
The temperatures are warm year-round throughout the Northeast, but you can always count on the pleasant ocean breezes. Still, to better experience the area, there is nothing like a Brazilian summer! The main explanation is that it rains a lot during the “winter” (warm weather with rain) months, making going to the beach, boat trips, etc., less appealing. Although our summers are not necessarily dry, I always prefer to go during the Brazilian summer (December – March). That’s when everything is open, and people enjoy the weather outdoors. Of course, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go there during the winter, which sometimes has minimal rain and more pleasant weather for people who cannot tolerate the heat; however, you will have more options and festivities during the summer months.
What You Should Pack for Your Trip
Here is a list of the absolute must-haves for this trip:
- Hat and sunglasses. You can’t possibly be thinking of going to Brazil without these two accessories. Hats are a must-have even when you are under an umbrella! Caps are a must for a walk, and straw hats are a typical accessory at the beach. And you will wear sunglasses throughout your trip.
- Sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Would you please bring sunscreen? Northeast of Brazil’s average temperature during the summer is at least 38 °C (100 °F). You should also bring mosquito repellent. Mosquito repellents are essential in some rural areas.
- Swimsuits and Shorts. You will swim and will wear shorts, I guarantee you. During the summer, shorts are the preferred outfit for Brazilians. You should bring a pair of pants, but choose one light enough to tolerate the heat—something like light khaki pants or linens. Although a pair of jeans is essential for any trip, you might find out that you will barely use them. But bring one with you if you need to go out at night and don’t want to wear shorts.
- Bring sandals and tennis shoes. We love sandals, and we wear them during the summer. But be aware that women should bring a nice pair of sandals. Something dressier than your regular flip-flop. Flip-flops are acceptable, but it would be better to wear them at the beach or on very casual occasions. Tennis shoes are essential if you plan to walk or exercise in the morning, as most Brazilians do. It’s an excellent opportunity to enjoy the ocean views without a car and stop to refresh from the heat with a drink of coconut water.
- Bring some nice shirts and summer dresses. Brazilians are very fashionable. Therefore, both men and women dress appropriately for the occasion and are up on the latest fashion trends. Of course, you’re on vacation, and the least of your concerns should be making a fashion statement; however, if you go to some restaurants, malls, etc., you might be surprised by how people take their wardrobe seriously. So, I would bring a few lovely pieces to go to more fancy places.
- Beach bag. Choose a foldable one. Since a considerable amount of your time will be going to the beach, beachfront locations, or boat trips, I recommend bringing a nice beach bag. Of course, you can buy it there, but you don’t want to spend the first days of your trip trying to find accessories, do you? So, please pack at least one foldable beach bag.
- Lightweight Raincoat. If you are going to buy one, choose one with head protection, light, and foldable. You will probably not use it, but you never know. It shouldn’t be the top priority.
- Avoid dark-colored clothes. It is evident the option for lighter colors considering the daily temperature you will encounter there. The best option is to use pastel colors. It will help you to tolerate the heat, and it will show your good taste.
The New Year’s Eve party
The end of the year is a significant event in Brazil. Most people enjoy it by going to New Year parties, preferably by the beach. And here is the tip: Brazilians wear white for the end-of-the-year festivity. It’s a tradition, and basically, everyone believes that it will bring good luck the following year (It has other reasons, but this is the basic idea). It can be any style you choose, as long as it is white. Women usually wear a white dress and men wear at least a white shirt. If you don’t have a white outfit, there are plenty of boutiques throughout the region with a vast selection of dresses, skirts, and shirts for all preferences. You should not miss this holiday. It’s one of the best times to be in Brazil.
Electronic Essentials
The electricity voltage in Brazil varies between 110V and 220V depending on the location. Most hotels will have a dual voltage or a voltage transformer if you need one. You can also easily buy a portable voltage transformer. I also recommend you bring a travel adapter. Please check out our universal travel adapter if you are searching for one.
I have dedicated a whole post to this subject. So, if you are going to travel internationally, please read about the Electronic Essentials for Your Next International Trip, which will give you an overview of some of the essential electronics you need for this trip.
Public Transportation and More
Uber and taxis are vastly available in the Northeast of Brazil as rental car companies. Unless you are on a very tight budget, I prefer these options to public transportation, like buses. Most hotels will have tours and transportation options if you feel more comfortable with groups.
And if you are going to visit different states, I would go by plane since it is the fastest and safest option for the region. But if you are the adventurous type, renting a car and exploring the most unique and secluded beaches in the northeast area of Brazil will make your trip all worth the price.
The Bottom Line
The northeastern part of Brazil is composed of nine states: Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, and Bahia. This region has the longest coastline in the country, and almost all capitals are on the coast side. Teresina is the only state capital in the Northeast located inland, reinforcing my theory that you will swim and wear shorts.
Although some states are just a few hours by plane from one another, I don’t think you should visit more than two states in just one trip. You will miss many stunning places. And as I have mentioned on my Pinterest board about Brazil (@brazemshop), I would start with Bahia – the birthplace of Brazil. Bahia is one of the most beautiful destinations in Brazil, known worldwide for its picturesque scenery and rich cultural heritage. Would you mind checking out my board entitled “Brazil,” where you can find many photos and videos of Bahia? I’m sure you will like it, and it will give you a good starting point for exploring the beauty of this historic place.
In summary, the Northeast of Brazil is one of Brazil’s most naturally beautiful regions globally, and it has the best coastline in the country. There, you’ll find very distinctive natural characteristics, a rich culture, and unique cuisine. It has many places to visit and things to do, and many cities still feel like you are in the countryside. In addition, people are beyond friendly and willing to help tourists.
